SEO or search engine optimization is a process that few business owners and individuals understand. However, search engine optimization is very simple for the most part. You do not have to be one of the smartest people in the world to understand what must be done in order to make your website rank for a number of different terms.
First, what words would you like to rank for? Find out what keywords are easy to rank for and what keywords are difficult to rank for. For example, if you are selling televisions, "televisions" is not a great keyword. "lcd 32 inch televisions" might be a better one. Long tail keywords are those keywords that are three words or longer in length. These keywords do not only provide better search engine results for users but they are among the most commonly searched keywords on the Internet.
Second, use your keywords. Do you have a website? If you do not, then you should be getting one ASAP. If you do have a website then you need to be sure that you get your keywords into your website content as soon as possible. The optimal keyword density is around 2%. So for every 100 words on your website, try to use your keywords twice. You can mix and match your keywords throughout your entire website. You do not have to stick to one keyword the entire time. However, if you have nothing but your keywords stuffed on one page, Google and the other search engines will not rank you well for obvious reasons.
Third, get backlinks. People need to have backlinks to their website in order to get recognized as worthy by Google. There are a number of different tricks to getting backlinks on Google. You can submit articles to article directories, use social media or simply ask to exchange links with another website owner. However, do not be afraid to ask for more links. SERPS or search engine ranking positions are where you rank in the search engine results for a given term or keyword. Having one of the top three positions for SERPS will ensure that you receive traffic from 70% of the people who click on a result from Google.
